Robert M. Gordon, Captain, US Army (Ret.) of Bethlehem, NH passed away at home surrounded by his loving family following a long illness on October 5, 2014.
He was born on Oct. 17, 1924 in Medford, Mass. to William W. and Faustina E. (Davis) Gordon, the eighth of nine children. Besides his wife, Marjorie (Brewster) Gordon he leaves three sons; Gary M. (Gail) of Bow, Dale R. (Julie) of Pelham, Kevin D. (Madeleine) of Francestown and former daughter-in-law Michele Gordon-Woonton of Pelham. Robert leaves eight very special grandchildren; Rob, Taylor, Ashley, Krista, Jeff, Jean-Luc, Janelle and Kaleigh, great-grandchildren Amber and Caleb, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his youngest son, Dean B. Gordon of Pelham; his four brothers, William W. of Moultonborough, Wallace B. of Salem, Russell D. of Arlington, Mass., Bruce S. of Lexington, Mass. as well as his four sisters, Eva H Roberts of Pelham, Dorothy L. Chapman, Isabel F. Gordon and Ethel F. Southard, all of Medford, Mass.
Robert was educated in the Medford Public Schools graduating from Medford High School in 1942. Less than one year after that, he was selected by his friends and neighbors to join World War II. He was assigned to the Corps of Military Police and spent most of the remaining war years with the 291st Military Police Company seeing service in Northern Ireland, England, and France, participating in several campaigns. He was discharged in 1945 and worked at the Process Engineering Company in Somerville, Mass. During this time he served in the Army Reserve and accepted an active Duty assignment at the Boston Army to screen records of wartime personal which led to reenlistment in the Regular Army and eventually to Officer Candidate School in Fort Riley, Kansas resulting in his commission as a Second Lt. in Aug. of 1949. While at the Boston Army Base he met and married Marjorie Ann Brewster also of Medford. For the next fifteen years they traveled the world together raising four sons in the process, Overseas assignments for the family included tours in Okinawa, France, and Eritrea, Africa which gave them all a chance to visit many other countries. Between overseas assignments he and his family served on many stateside Army bases.
Army retirement came in September of 1965 where the family finally settled down in Pelham. He was employed as a buyer at National Radio in Malden, Mass. as a sales person and Customer Service Manager with TRW Electronic Components Division in Waltham, Mass., and finally with, Kitchen & Kutchin in Burlington, Mass. in the same type of work. Full retirement came in 1989 followed by a move in 1993 from Pelham to Bethlehem. In his retirement years he occupied his time traveling, reading, gardening, landscaping, and performing many handyman chores around his home and homes of others.
Funeral arrangements are handled by the Waters Funeral Home, 50 South Main Street, Concord, NH. There will be no viewing or services at the funeral home as is his wish. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a brief service and interment at the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH on Friday October 10, 2014 at 12 noon, followed by a reception at Alan's Restaurant at 133 N Main St, Boscawen, NH. Donations may be made to the organization or charity of your choice in Robert's name.
