She received her associate degree from Michigan State University and went on to receive her bachelor's degree, majoring in Psychology-Sociology, from the University of New Hampshire.

As an avid scrapbooker, no event went undocumented with much effort put into capturing every detail. Her love of reading books grew to her collecting them and creating an extensive library. Most of her Sunday's were spent starting a puzzle.
From the moment her grandchildren Olivia and Wright were born, they too became a joyful passion. She traveled from a distance to visit every month for the first few years of their lives, birthdays, holidays, to be part of all of their milestones and accomplishments.
Melinda was predeceased by her husband, Robert Brotherton, and her son Scott Brotherton.
She is survived by her daughter Heather Lindgren and her husband Robert of Ridgefield, CT; her granddaughter, Olivia Siclari and her husband Steven formerly of Raliegh, NC; her grandson, Wright Lindgren of Ridgefield, CT; and her sister, Cordelia Harrington of South Windsor, CT.
