Mary Ruth S. Griffin
Concord – Mary Ruth (Sullivan) Griffin, age 90, died on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Presidential Oaks surrounded by her loving family after a recent illness.
Mary was born in Concord the daughter of the late Timothy J. and Nora V. (Collins) Sullivan. She was a graduate of St. John's High School Class of 1940, where she participated in many sports and was the captain of the girls Basketball Team. She pursued a career in the field of law and enjoyed working for various judges in Concord. In 1953, Mary married Dr. Raymond Michael Griffin and they raised their family on Auburn Street in Concord. Mary was predeceased by her husband of 38 years on February 4, 1991.
Mary had a great love for the arts, opera and all types of music. Mary was active in various community service organizations, as she was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Carmelite Guild. Mary was a devout Catholic and a life-long communicant of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Concord. Some of Mary's hobbies included bowling, golf, tennis and walking. She was an avid swimmer as well. Additionally, Mary and her husband were one of the original members of COPOCO Pool and Tennis Club, where her family still maintains a membership. Mary and Dr. Griffin loved to travel and enjoyed time spent with their children at their lake house, ocean, and the mountains. Mary was also a dedicated Boston Red Sox fan, as well as being devoted to the Boston Celtics, New England Patriots and Boston Bruins. Mary truly loved life and she touched many people with her engaging smile!
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by seven siblings, Margaret M. Shurtleff, Herbert D. Sullivan, James M. Sullivan, Paul T. Sullivan, Reverend John T. Sullivan, Clara L. Sullivan and Edward F. Sullivan.
Mary is survived by her two daughters Christine G. Stuart and her husband Philip of Concord, and Noreen A. Griffin of Concord; her son Michael T. Griffin and his wife Brenda of Bow; 2 grandchildren, Caitlyn and Andrew Griffin of Bow. She also leaves Dr. Griffin's 2 sisters, Pauline G. Haney of North Brunswick, NJ and Mary G. Krost of Decatur, GA; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, September 26, from 5 to 8 PM at the Waters Funeral Home, 50 South Main Street, Concord.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 27 at 10 AM at Christ the King, St. Peter's Church, 135 North State Street, Concord.
Burial will follow at the Calvary Cemetery in Concord.
