John "Russ" Sweeney
Pembroke- John "Russ" Sweeney died on Tuesday, July 1st 2014 at Concord Hospice House.
Russ was born in Boston, MA on August 23,1934 the son of the late John Sr. and Priscilla (Robinson) Sweeney. Following graduation from the Boston school system he enlisted i n the US Army and served in the Korean War. Upon discharge he studied Engineering at Northeastern University. He specialized in industrial instrumentation and control systems for the Foxboro Co. and Stone and Webster Engineering Corp. and was senior member of the Instrument Society of America.
He and his family lived in Attleboro, MA for 17 years. While there he was involved in community and church activities having taught Sunday School for many years, serving as Selectman for the Attleboro City Council and Planning Board and the Massachusetts Community Mental Heath Board.
Moving to Warner in 1977 where he was employed by the Sabin Electric Co. as Engineering Manager and he continued his community involvement in the Warner Proffesional & Business Assoc. and volunteer work at the NH State Prison. He was subsequently appointed to serve as the Roman Catholic Chaplain for the NH Department of Corrections by the late Bishop Leo E. O'Neil. He attended the Correctional Officers Training at the NH Police Standard & Training Council up until his retirement in 1998.
In 2006 he and his wife Julia moved to Pembroke where they spent many happy years and met many new friends.
Russ is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years Julia (d'Entremont) Sweeney; his four sons of whom he was so proud and their families; Stephen and Martha Sweeney of Beverly, MA, Mark and Paula Sweeney of Stamford, CT, David and Tricia Sweeney of Winchendon, MA, and Matthew Sweeney and Nancy Kimball of Sunapee, NH; 7 grandchildren, Andrew, Renee, Laura, Jessica, Erica, Nina and John; a sister Joan A. McGrath f Tewksbury, MA.
A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, July 8th at 10:30 am at the United Church of Warner, 43 East Main Street, Warner, NH.
Burial will be at 2:00 PM in the NH State Veterans Cemetery, 326 DW Highway, Boscawen, NH.
