George E.
Fryer Jr.
September 12, 2023
George Edward Fryer, Jr. age 92, of East Side Drive passed away peacefully
surrounded by his family at Hospice House in Concord, NH on Tuesday morning,
September 12, 2023.
George was born August 9, 1931 in Ansonia, CT the son of the late George Sr. and
Dorothy (Blake) Fryer. After serving 2 years in the Army, receiving the Korean
Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, he returned home to finish his education
in CT. There, he met his future wife, Helen (Wyatt) Fryer at the Methodist Church
in Hartford and they were married on June 29, 1957, becoming an incredible team
with bonds that grew stronger year after year. After a wonderful honeymoon on
Lake Winnipesaukee, they fell in love with NH. George continued his education at
New England College in Henniker NH, graduating with an engineering degree in
1958. George worked for 33 years at NHDOT as a Professional Engineer, both in
the Office of Audit and in the Bureau of Highway Design. After two years in
Concord, they settled in Pembroke NH where they lived for more than 50 years,
raising their family of five children and joining wholeheartedly in the community.
Over the years, George was involved in a variety of ways including serving on the
Town Planning Board and the Zoning Board of Adjustment. He was also a Boy
Scout Leader working with the local troop and the District. He also volunteered
with the Friendly Kitchen and Habitat for Humanity. In his later life, he was active
in the M&Ms - a senior citizen group "Motivated and Moving" with Helen. In 1995,
George and Helen were together voted citizens of the year!
George was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church for more than 60
years, with a strong faith. He loved his church family and his recently adopted Bow
Mills UMC church family, attending both services faithfully every Sunday. He
served in many roles including Trustees, Pastor Parish Relations Committee, UM
Men's group, Church League Basketball coach, usher, videographer, and the Donut
Deacons.
Additionally, George and Helen participated in many other activities together:
annual extended family camping trips, Concord Coach Square Dance Club, the
Wesley Couples Club, and several years of travel in their motorhome across the
country. George and Helen moved to Heritage Heights (HHH) in 2012, where he
greatly enjoyed the spectacular workshop and made many handy-dandy things for
his neighbors and friends that lived there. He loved the community of friends that
he had at HHH, and nurtured many relationships by providing rides, tinkering with
stuff to fix it, and generally making folks laugh!
He is survived by his sister Ruth (Fryer) Foster and her husband Cliff of Gray, ME;
five children and their spouses: Karen Fryer and Gene Kadish of East Thetford, VT;
Dennis and Terry Fryer of Hudson, NH; Leslie and Orville Harness of Beverly Hills,
FL; Virginia Fryer and Bryant Stevener and JoAnn Fryer and Rich Rooney of
Concord NH; grandchildren: Rachel, Emily, Kelsey, Morgan, Abby, Kate, Lauren
and Colleen; and great grandchildren: Karsen, Kinleigh and Adalynn, as well as
many members of a large and loving extended family. He was predeceased by his
wife Helen, his parents, and two of his siblings and their spouses: Robert and Ann
(Ambrose) Fryer; and Dorothy (Fryer) and Ralph Hoyt.
