Bertha Ruth Benson
Centerville, MA- Bertha Ruth Benson (née Hatch), 80, died Friday, September 19, at Hope Hospice in Sandwich, MA. Her three beloved children were at her side. She was born on August 30, 1934 in Concord, NH, the eldest daughter of the late Leo G. and Bertha (née Carr) Hatch. A proud graduate of St. John's High School in Concord, NH, Bertha was a Treasurer with New Hampshire Savings Bank for over twenty years.
A former resident of Loudon, NH, Bertha enjoyed sewing, cooking, travel and spending time with her family, which included teaching her grandchildren how to bake and taking scenic rides along the New England coast. She loved the fall season, the ocean, sunrises, walks along the beach and spending time on Cape Cod. Bertha also took pleasure in being a selfless caregiver.
She is predeceased by her husband of 36 years, Carl Walter Benson who passed in 1991, and five brothers: Leo, Paul, David, Richard and Robert Hatch.
Bertha is survived by her companion of twenty years, Michael Manzo of Centerville, MA; two daughters, Gayle Landry and her husband Joseph of Salisbury, NH and Darlene Lynch and her husband Brian of Bow; one son, Charles Benson and his partner Rhonda Davignon of Loudon; one sister, Josephine Takala of Concord; and seven grandchildren: Justin Landry, Jonell Landry, Benjamin Landry, Kelly Lynch, Emma Lynch and Hannah Benson. Bertha is likewise survived by many nieces and nephews and her brother-in-law Bobby Benson and his wife Sylvia. Bertha's family would like to give special recognition to her devoted caretakers in Cape Cod.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, September 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Waters Funeral Home 50 South Main St., Concord, NH.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 24, at 10 a.m. at St. John's Evangelist Church, 72 South Main St., Concord, NH. Burial will follow in the Blossom Hill Cemetery, Concord, NH.
Donations may be made in Bertha's memory to Hope Hospice 765 Attucks Lane, Hyannis, MA 02601, or to the charity of one's choice.
