Obituary

Anne-Lee Verville passed away peacefully on April 27, 2024, at The Birches in Concord, NH.  She was a beloved sister, aunt, godmother, cousin and friend.

Anne-Lee was born in Concord on June 9, 1945, and grew up in Hopkinton, NH where she attended Hopkinton Schools. After graduation from Hopkinton High School, she attended Smith College from which she received a BA in Mathematics. In addition, Anne-Lee was awarded an honorary Doctor of Commercial Sciences from Bloomsberg University.

Two weeks out of college, Anne-Lee embarked on her career of over 30 years at IBM.  She started as a Marketing Representative and worked her way up through the ranks to her final role as General Manager of IBM's Global Education Industry, the organization that develops technology solutions to educate customers throughout the world.  Through her years there she served as IBM US Marketing Group Chief Financial Officer, IBM Chief Information Officer, President of two software development divisions and led IBM's effort to support the education industry worldwide until her retirement in 1997. These roles enabled her to travel the world. When she retired from IBM, she returned to Hopkinton.

She also was appointed to the National Skill Standard Board in 1995 by President Clinton, served on the Board of Directors of the National Alliance of Business and the Board of Advisors at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, the Board of Trustees of Western Governors University and Board of Advisors at Wake Forest University.  Additionally, she was a member of the Committee of 200 (which is an association of the world's leading corporate and entrepreneurial businesswomen) and served on the C200 Finance Committee.  She also wrote many articles on the needs of our educational system and co-authored a book What Business Wants from Higher Education.

Anne-Lee never truly retired.  She served on the Board of Trustees of the Columbia Atlantic Funds and was a member of the Board of Directors of Enesco Group Inc., including as Chairman of the Board.  She was also a member of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Board of Trustees for 10 years of which she served two years as Chairman of the Board.

In her retirement years, she enjoyed time with her family, especially at her second home at Kiawah Island, SC which was her happy place. She had many friends there and spent most of her winters there enjoying the warmer weather.  She also loved going to "camp" at the family camp on 1st Connecticut Lake in Pittsburg which was a tradition started by her parents in the 50's. She enjoyed traveling and especially attending her annual IBM reunion with some of her co-workers that took them to various locations throughout the world.

She was predeceased by her parents, Homer A. Verville and Anne (McCready) and her brother, Homer P. Verville.  She is survived by her brother, Martin and his wife, Toni (Rudolph) of Stratham and their daughters, Maggie Conn and Lizzie Busby; her brother Michael and his wife Patricia Murtagh of Brunswick, Maine, former spouse, Sarah Lee Addington, and their daughters Kaye Verville (Edward Gottfried) and their children, George and Freddie Gottfried and daughter, Claire Verville.  Her Godson, Henry Pfiefer (Susannah) and his mom Pringle (who was a longtime friend), hold a very special place in her heart. Additionally, she is survived by many cousins which includes her cousin Penny Verville who also was her neighbor for many years.  She will surely be missed by all who knew her.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Birches, The Granite VNA, and the staff at Home Instead for taking such good care of Anne-Lee in her final years.
