Obituary

Anna Josephine (Myers) Welch, 100, died peacefully on February 10, 2024 at Montello Manor in Lewiston, ME, with her daughter, Nancy, by her side. She was a resident of Montello Manor for the past three years where she was loved by many of the staff. Anna, however, lived most of her life in Barnstead, NH.

Anna was born on December 31, 1923 in Philadelphia, PA to William and Mary Myers. She was the second oldest of 10 children, nine of whom lived to adulthood. She attended Catholic schools in Philadelphia and graduated from West Catholic Girls High School. She entered the convent for a year and then worked as a telephone operator in Philadelphia.

She met her future husband, Raymond "Bill" Welch, at an USO dance at Fort Dix, NJ where he was stationed with the US Army. They married on February 24, 1951 and then lived in Fontainebleau, France for three years where Bill was stationed and where their daughter, Nancy, was born.

Anna worked for the telephone company in Concord and Laconia, NH. In her later years, she was the bookkeeper for the Town of Barnstead Highway Department, which her husband, Bill, headed.

Anna was very active in her community, teaching religious education classes and as a member of the Comet Club and The American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed singing, reading, and was very dedicated to her faith. She also enjoyed travelling and she and Bill would take trips to Nova Scotia, Cape Breton, and New Brunswick, Canada. They would also travel to various places around the US with the Fontainebleau Fellows, an Army reunion group.

Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Welch, her father, William Myers, her mother, Mary Flood Myers, her sisters Mary Salmon, Dolores Trefelner, and Patricia Vishio and brothers, Larry Myers, John Meyers, and Edward Meyers.

Anna is survived by her daughter, Nancy Welch Murphy and her husband Edward Murphy; her grandsons Seth Murphy, Ian Hammond and Aaron Murphy; her great-grandchildren, Dylan, Jonas, Paco and Isadora; her sister Elsie Speck and brothers, William Myers and Joseph Myers as well as many nieces and nephews.
