Obituary

Ann T. Carpenter, Age 100, of Presidential Oaks, and longtime resident of Pittsfield, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Friday, September 27th. Ann was born May 1,1924  in Concord, NH, to the late Gardner (Gig) and Jane (Connor) Tilton. A proud graduate of Concord High School, she was honored with the Daughters of the American Revolution Award, which allowed her to represent her school at a national convention. She later graduated from Colby Sawyer College with a nursing degree, during which she contributed to the war effort by stuffing burlap bags with cotton.

After completing her studies, Ann moved to Boston, where she worked as a blood technician at Boston Children's Hospital. She married her high school sweetheart, Dr. Thurston J. Carpenter, and together they built a wonderful life in Pittsfield, where he served as the town dentist. The couple was deeply rooted in the community, earning the title of Citizens of the Year for their dedication to service.

Ann was a passionate community leader, actively involved as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, a long-time member of the Pittsfield Women of Rotary, and the Recreational Commissioner for the Pittsfield swimming pool. She cherished the annual tradition of lighting the Christmas tree by the Pittsfield waterfall with her Rotary friends. Ann was also a long time member of the First Congregational Church of PIttsfield where she was active on many committees She drove the Pittsfield High School baseball team to all away games for 4 years as the town didn't have the funds for a bus.  Together with Thurston, also known as Doc, they ran a Christmas tree farm, generously gifting more trees than they sold.

"Thursty Hill," their beloved home, was a hub for family gatherings filled with laughter, tennis, long walks, and snowmobiling adventures. Ann's open-door policy meant her home was always full of friends and neighbors. Summers were spent at their family cottage on Lake Sunapee, a cherished gathering place for over a century. An avid golfer, she was a long-time member of the Concord Country Club. An avid tennis player, she and Doc built a tennis court at home and had their own community tennis league.

Ann will be remembered for her warm spirit, giving nature, and zest for life. She touched many lives with her kindness and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
